Candice Chantrell

Behind the Mic
Prepare to be uplifted. Candice Chantrell’s debut album Behind the Mic has arrived. Loaded with energy and lyrical conviction Candice’s music is a unique combination of Pop infused with flavours of R&B & Funk, that touches the heart and moves the body.
Candice has come a long way from the tiny town of Melville Saskatchewan and even farther from the roots of her classical instruction. After receiving numerous singing awards and constant encouragement from childhood mentors her love for music carried her to Brandon University’s Faculty of Music, and later to Grant MacEwan College’s contemporary Vocal Performance program.
In 2006, the vision for the debut album was born in a small coffee shop with a good friend/fellow musician. “I was at an all time low. Lost in life and not knowing what I should do next” Chantrell explains. “I was going through the typical trial of trying to figure out what my life was ‘supposed’ to be. I tried to step away from music for a while and have what some might call a ‘normal life’. I quickly found out that I couldn’t do it and I just felt empty. That
conversation reminded me that deep down music has always been what I know and love best.” She realized it was time to return.
Now residing in Toronto, and with her debut album in hand, Candice Chantrell has thrown herself into the world of Pop/R&B with style, energy, and dedication. Behind the Mic showcases Candice’s remarkable vocal ability, paired with mainstream music that maintains a sense of depth and sophistication. It features a variety of songs written and arranged by Jesse Peters (Lounge MD from Paramedic) and co-written by Candice. The album leaves listeners with a feeling of empowerment while exploring concepts of independence, personal strength, and pursuing your dreams. “I’m a true optimist. I believe in honesty, and hope, and positive thinking, and doing the right thing, and the power of believing in yourself. I’ve always wanted those messages to come through my music.”
Candice released her two first singles (“Down to the Disco” and “Beautiful Music”) to radio stations nationwide where they appeared on the playlists of 25 stations. Soon after, she celebrated the national release/distribution of “Behind the Mic” on October 20, 2009 via Fontana North/Universal Music, a world-wide publishing deal with Sound of Pop/ole (www.majorlyindie.com), and most recently the worldwide digital release of the album via indie
label Sound of Pop via IDLA.
Since the albums release, Candice has focused on performing. She has played several venues/events throughout the GTA including such as The Bread & Circus, Statlers On Church, Jezebel Nightclub, The Piston, The Central, Slacks, Alley Katz, Cam’s Place, The Old Nick, Toronto Wine & Spirit Festival, Toronto Independent Music Awards, Toronto Indie Week, Mining for Heart of Gold, Club Cayo Coco, The Rosewater Room, The Four Seasons Hotel, etc.
Still actively performing in and around the GTA, Candice is currently in the process of writing her next album. She plans to continue performing and writing songs to inspire and comfort the soul. “On a very basic level, we’re all human right? We’re all wanting to relate… to each other, to thoughts, to experiences. To me ‘relating’ is a comfort. Comfort in knowing you’re not alone in those thoughts and experiences. I want listeners to relate to my music and my words because if they do, then we relate to each other. Then, in a sense, we keep each other company. Isn’t that a nice thought?.”
This girl is the total package… you become emotionally involved in what Chantrell is singing…
