Galaa

Galaa is Aley Waterman, Adam Hogan, Romesh Thavanathan, and Ashley Chalmers. Hailing from St. John’s NL, Galaa originated when Aley Waterman received a demo grant from Music NL and wanted to turn her piano-driven solo tunes into intricate dreamy soundscapes.  Galaa released their first EP, Young Hymns, to great critical reception in 2013, and full-length, “The Speech” in early 2019. “The Speech” is the result of much time spent thinking, playing, and recording in spaces ranging from beautiful art galleries on the ocean to Romesh’s dad’s basement apartment in St. John’s. They have supported inspiring acts including Owen Pallett, DIANA, and Tegan and Sara. Vish Khanna of Exclaim! described their sound as “moody tunes that go from measured to mathematical with swift precision” with “ambient patterns and rhythms that have a vague post-rock tinge to them, which shakes their dance-pop foundation”.  “The Speech” was considered for a 2019 Polaris Music Prize nomination and they were recently awarded the 2019 MusicNL “Electronic Artist of the Year” in 2020.
