Softcult
“Mercedes and Phoenix…are not only writing hypnotic melodies steeped in political and social discourse…they’re building an empire.”
-Stereogum, March 2023
Softcult is a 2024 Juno Award nominated alternative indie-rock duo comprised of twin siblings Mercedes Arn-Horn (She/Her) (Vocals/Guitar) and Phoenix Arn-Horn (They/Them) (Vocals/Drums) from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Seamlessly combining Grunge, Shoegaze, Dreampop, and Punk into their ‘music with a message’, Softcult has become the band inspiring a new Riot Grrrl movement for the digital age. PRO: feminism, social activism, creative freedom, self-empowerment, gender neutrality. ANTI: sexism, racism, homophobia, trans-phobia, patriarchy.
Softcult are quickly gaining fans by building a safe and inclusive music community, and gathering industry supporters with the DIY approach to their music, visuals, art, and most importantly, with their message.
This DIY approach includes writing, performing, recording and producing all of their music, as well as directing and editing all of their music videos, designing all artwork, all photography and creating a monthly hand-made zine.
Writing from their own experiences in an honest, frank way feels vulnerable for them “but more than anything, we just feel like it’s stuff that should be talked about. Even if it’s a hard conversation to have, it’s important to try” says Phoenix and Mercedes adds “We’re not interested in sugarcoating anything, it’s supposed to be uncomfortable. Your skin should crawl when you listen to a song about rape.”
Since forming in 2021, Softcult have released 3 EPs, which have generated buzz and acclaim in Canada and across the globe. They have toured the world extensively including sold out headlining shows in Bangkok, Tokyo, Manila, London UK, NYC, Toronto in 2023 as well as major support tours such as direct support for Incubus on their Fall 2022 UK tour.
Softcult are also well represented in the press, having been featured as a band to watch by Alternative Press, Stereogum, BBC, CBC, GAY Times, DIY, The Line Of Best Fit and the cover of Kerrang! Magazine in March 2023.
“…I have to give praise to what I think is going to be the next big thing…a band that goes by the name of Softcult.”
